Rio Ferdinand’s late winner against Swansea has been voted Manchester United’s Goal of the Month for May by fans on the club’s official websites.
The strike attracted 56% of the combined votes in the polls on ManUtd.com and its Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish and Arabic versions, beating goals by Shinji Kagawa (16%) and Alex Büttner (9%) against West Brom into second and third place respectively.
Judging by his delighted celebrations, the significance of the goal wasn’t lost on Rio. As well as securing three points for United, it was the final ever home goal of Sir Alex’s reign, not to mention Rio’s first since January 2008.
Also nominated in our shortlist were goals by Larnell Cole and Marnick Vermijl in the Under-21s’ league semi-final and final wins over Liverpool and Tottenham.
Congratulations to Michael Holman of Wisconsin, USA, the winner of our final Goal of the Month competition for the 2012/13 season. He’ll receive a Reds home shirt signed by Rio.
