Manchester United could still sign Robert Lewandowski from Borussia Dortmund if they play to Jurgen Klopp's personality.
Jurgen Klopp has hit out at Bayern Munich via German newspaper Bild, suggesting that he has heard nothing about an agreed or official deal for star striker Robert Lewandowski.
Klopp has gone on to say that he expects the striker to be a Dortmund player heading into next season suggesting the links and confirmation from various sources at Bayern Munich and the player’s agent are all wrong.
It’s only a couple of days since Dortmund were narrowly beaten in the Champions League final by their greatest rivals but Klopp is clearly annoyed which is going to make him less than willing to do business with Bayern.
“As of today there is no official offer from Bayern Munich. I am still assuming that Robert will be playing next season for us - The really funny thing is that they all pretend as if the deal is already done. Jupp Heynckes says this, his agents say that,” Klopp told Bild.
That leaves the door ever so slightly still open for Manchester United if they want to try and secure a transfer for one of the most talked about strikers in contemporary European football.
Although Klopp is effectively rubbishing the idea he’ll leave for Bayern, United could win a bit of favour with the German coach by putting together a big bid to take him away from their rivals. Dortmund remain in a tough position because of the fact Lewandowski has just one year left on his current contract.
If United want the striker, and there’s every indication they would still be interested, they can put together a formal bid and go to Dortmund above board, keeping everything as professional and as open as possible.
It seems that Klopp would respect that sort of approach more than anything else, considering the obvious respect and desire he has to keep one of his best players.
In short, United can play on the bad feeling between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund which has been going on for decades and in the most contemporary case, the defeat Dortmund have just suffered on Europe’s biggest stage.
It wouldn’t be a cheap deal for United because Dortmund would want to money for their forward, but it would more than likely make Klopp more than willing to do business with the Old Trafford side.
If what he’s told Bild isn’t true and a deal has been agreed for Lewandowski behind closed doors then Klopp has been undermined in the biggest way and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he walked away from the German club.
That would also indicate that United may have dodged a bullet if the Polish striker is represented by people and officials who are willing to do unofficial deals without a manager’s consent.
Lewandowski may well have given his word to Bayern, but that means nothing if Dortmund do not accept a bid for the striker from them, with no buy-out clause in place as facilitated the move for Mario Gotze.
The door is still open and the move is still possible if you trust what Klopp says.
