Phil Neville is set to make a return to Old Trafford to become first-team coach under David Moyes.
Neville, who made almost 400 appearances for United before joining the Toffees in 2005 and was made Everton captain by Moyes, was looking at taking over the reins at Goodison Park.
However, with Roberto Martinez favourite to fill that position following his resignation from Wigan Athletic today, Neville is likely to move back to Old Trafford to reunite with Moyes.
The midfielder, who retired at the end of the season, recently admitted that he had been picking up tips from Moyes over the last five years.
"I pick his [Moyes's] brains constantly," he said in The Guardian. "What it is like when your team goes on a night out? Do you set curfews?" Or: "You go and watch a training session and you think, 'That looks easy'. But then you think, 'How big is the pitch to make it work?'"
Neville will be followed to Manchester United by assistant manager Steve Round, goalkeeping coach Chris Woods and chief scout Robbie Cooke as David Moyes completes a raid on his old backroom staff at Everton, The Guardian reports.
The quartet will fill the gaps left by four of Sir Alex Ferguson's senior backroom staff with Rene Meulensteen, Mike Phelan, Eric Steele, and Martin Ferguson all having departed the club.
Moyes also has to make a decision over Wayne Rooney. The birth of Rooney's second son and Moyes' plan to go on holiday this week has meant that the pair have not had much of a chance to sort out the player's future at the club.
Rooney is also set to meet up with Phil Neville's brother, Gary, at the weekend when he meets up with the England squad. Since retirement, Gary has combined roles as a Sky Sports presenter with a position as a coach for the national side under Roy Hodgson.
