The former Dortmund star joined the Premier League champions at the start of the 2012/13 season after winning back-to-back Bundesliga title with the Borussians.
His former club beat the odds to book a place in the Champions League final where they will face domestic rivals Bayern Munich in an all-German final at Wembley on Saturday, and their impressive run has given Kagawa extra motivation to progress further in next season's competition.
And despite limited game-time with the Red Devils in his debut campaign, the Japan international is targeting European success next term.
"I want to play better in the Champions League next season because I've been inspired to see Dortmund make it to the final," he told United's official Japanese site.
"I was encouraged to know there is a chance for me to be on the big stage with United.
"I've followed how they (Dortmund) are doing and have kept in touch with some of the players. Each time they progressed in the Champions League, I sent them a text to say congratulations.
"I expect it will be an exciting match and I hope Dortmund will be European champions."
